Save our bees

As part of the Sustainable Living Certificate course I’m doing, I am currently learning about BEES, native bees in particular. ❤

Native bees are amazing pollinators, way way better than the European honey bees. And due to the loss of habitat, and being in competition with the European honey bees, the population of our native bees have plummeted significantly.

Native bees thrive in the native environment, native plants with flowers are best for them. And the good news is, each of us can contribute to helping our native bees regain their habitat and this is how.

🍁 Plant some native flowering plants such as grevellea, bottle brush, native rosemary, native finger lime bush, hardenbergia, or any other bee loving flowering plants. Make sure to plant a diverse range.
🍁 Make some simple native bee hives by drilling some holes in different sizes and depth between 5 to 10cm depth on a piece of hardwood and hang it on a tree. These hives are for solitary bees.
🍁 You can also build a bee hive for native social bees and keep them in your yard, and although you may not harvest much of the honey, it will be close to no ongoing maintenance. Note that native bees don’t usually sting so this may be an amazing addition to your urban garden.
🍁 Leave out a bird bath in the garden and put some stones in them so the bees can land on them for some water.

That’s it! Pretty simple and effortless really. A lot of the time, to make an impact is not about doing big things. It is about doing little things consistently and persistently. And the more people participate, the more of an impact there will be. And this is how we can make an impact to the environment, to bring back our native bees. Start from our backyard…

I’m now preparing my garden for the native bees as I’m hoping to keep some native bees. Today I bought some native flowering plants and I will continue to expand the range. ❤

We will also be making some simple native bee hives for both solitary bees and social bees. I can’t wait!! it will be so much fun for the kids and for us of course.
